Research Interests
Geoarchaeology and Environmental History of the African Sahel

Development of cross-disciplinary investigations considering past environments, past land use practices and more recent environmental policies; through scientific, historical ethnographic and archaeological methodologies a new understanding of the past landscapes in the Sahel region is being sought. This major theme is being developed through the RCUK Academic Fellowship.
Research into historical and contemporary soil resource utilization by the Kanuri and Shuwa Arab peoples of North East Nigeria with cooperation from the University of Frankfurt and with the University of Maiduguri, Nigeria. Pilot study funded by the British Academy.
The outputs from this work is articulated to various audiences including public outreach projects (see below) and research-led teaching.
Geoarchaeology research in the North Atlantic region

Soil analysis in Greenland
Ecosystem modelling and analysis of past land resource use at archaeological sites in Faroes, Iceland, and Greenland. Funded by the Leverhulme Trust as part of the Landscapes circum-Landnám Programme.
NERC funded research investigating past manuring practices on Papa Stour,Shetland .This involves image-analysis of soil sections, classification of plaggen soils, and spatial-data analysis. This work is in collaboration with the School of Chemistry, University of Bristol
Novel methods of examining geoarchaeological materials
Synchrotron X-ray analyses of the in situ degradation of archaeological materials . Work in collaboration with European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) and the University of Wales, Cardiff .
Micromorphology and image analysis, of materials from archaeological sites .
Computed tomography of soils. Using high-resolution X-Ray computed tomography it is possible to examine internal features and structures of soils in three dimensions.
Outreach
Outreach activities are being developed as part of the RCUK Academic Fellowship. These are designed to increase awareness of the role of science in society and especially raise awareness of the role of geoarchaeology and environmental history in understanding the sustainability of societies both past and present. The special nature of the Sahel has been emphasized. In order to encourage both engagement and reflection on the subject areas several types of activity have been developed:
- Development of a collaborative project with Goldsmiths, University of London crossing traditional science and arts boundaries that seeks to encourage reflection upon the nature of the environment and the sustainability of societies and upon novel representations. Recent installation exhibits:
- National Museum of Scotland
- Shunt Vaults, London
- City Gallery, Prague – ENTER3 festival
- Tolbooth, Stirling

Stone Bell House Gallery, Prague, Czech Republic
- Meet the Scientist events
At the National Museum of Scotland; discussing use of geoarchaeology, methods employed and the nature of working in the Sahel. Supported in kind by Olympus Microscopes
At local primary schools with talks to pupils on how science can help us understand the nature of materials.
- Public discussion events
Discussion with sixth-form pupils on the futures of technology through the UK Department of Trade and Industry programme Sciencehorizons.
